Day 22~ My alone time behavior

24 Mar

me timeCarrie Bradshaw liked to make a stack of saltines and put grape jelly on them. She would eat them standing up in the kitchen while reading fashion magazines. This was her SSB~ secret, single behavior. (probably one of my favorite episodes and the funniest)

My SSB ~ Secret, Single Behavior is one that absolutely cherish. I love spending time alone in the comfort of my own home with my magazines, Sex and the City DVDs, or favorite shows DVR’d.

Here are 5 things (clearly I have more) I love to do during my alone time:

1. Relax on my couch, computer in hand and blogging.

2. Read my magazines from cover to cover.

3. Watch as many seasons of Sex and the City that I want and not feel guilty about it.

4. Take a bubble bath.

5. Paint my nails.

Day 4: Best Childhood Memory

5 Mar

Best childhood memory. Well, what shall I call my childhood. The time from when my family was together as one, or the time from when my mom raised two girls on her own.

I feel like I grew up with two different childhoods. When my family was ‘one’, I had the best childhood. I remember going on many family vacations, taking part in dance and cheerleading, growing up with family and friends around our house because we had the best yard with an in-ground pool and always being happy.

Then came the childhood that began at age 12~ my family became two separate families. This is the childhood that I remember so vividly. My mom gave us everything and anything that we wanted. She would work a million and one jobs just to make sure we could have and do what we wanted. I remember growing up with the best girlfriends that were going through what my mom, sister and I were going through. We had the best support system and had many laughs during our weekly Friday night dinners with these other single moms and their daughters. I also love that I still see and have these girls in my life. It’s a bond that can never be forgotten. There is something to be said about single moms and their daughters. They become more than just mom and child. You become best friends. This childhood that I was given at the age of 12 because my dad and mom got divorced, was the best childhood I could have ever asked for.

21 years later, I have my childhood to thank for the woman I am today. My mother was the best, and still is, role model any girl could ask for. She was strong, independent and resilient and showed my sister and I that a woman can do and be anything she wants to be. Because of her, I am the same strong, resilient and independent woman she was at my age (minus the 2 kids). I hope that one day, I can give my daughter/son the same childhood my parents gave me.

Valentine’s Day….just another day

13 Feb

“Surrender the idea that being single on Valentine’s Day somehow makes you flawed. One day does NOT define you.” ~The Single Woman

I was scrolling through my Twitter feed today and I came across this quote. Once again Miss Mandy Hale, a.k.a. The Single Woman, hit my emotion right on the nail. As I try to not get anxiety about tomorrow being Valentine’s Day, like so many other people out there, I have had to stop and reminlive-laugh-loved myself that I am not flawed. There is nothing wrong with me and there is also nothing wrong with me thinking tomorrow is just another day for me. Do I wish things were somewhat different? Yes. But until they are, I will carry on as usual. And I urge many of you who are feeling the same way to do the same.

One year later and now at the age of 33, and still fabulously “single” (I like to think I am forever 29), I have become 99.9% okay with the fact that I am having just another day tomorrow. Do I want the flowers (daisies preferably, I like to be different) and just a simple card?? Yes. Am I willing to wait for the man who wants to do those things for me? Yes. Until then, I have 52 children who will make me laugh and smile tomorrow. And I have a niece and nephew who I love to pieces. Tomorrow, you need to surround yourself with the people who make you laugh, smile and feel loved. Reflect upon all the wonderful people you DO have in your life that care and love you. I always believe actions speak louder than words. Hopefully these people in your life will let you know how they feel; even if it’s the simplest act.

I’m sure there are many people out there who are in a new relationship or just starting one, and I urge you to just treat tomorrow like it’s any other special day you would have with that person. I don’t think tomorrow should signify why someone tells you how they feel. If you like someone, tell them. If you want to see that special someone smile, make them. You do not need a ‘holiday’ to make you do those things. You can’t be afraid to express how you feel either. Tomorrow may be the boost you need to be able to do these things and use it as that. That’s okay. But don’t look at tomorrow as the only day to do it and not continue with it.

For those of you who will be in the same ‘position’ as me, I urge you to wake up tomorrow with a smile. Put on some of your favorite music while you’re getting ready and start your day off right. Treat yourself to something special. A treat to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, a cocktail with a single girlfriend ( and don’t go out complaining about men either!)~ reminisce about some great stories you both can share or just relax with a glass of wine when you get home and watch one of your favorite shows you’ve been dying to catch up on or pop in your favorite movie.

Tomorrow is about you and only you. And if you have a special someone in your life, don’t be afraid to tell them how you feel. Carpe Diem my friends!

I wish for you a wonderful Valentine’s Day and a memorable one. It only comes around once year, make it count.

"It is in the letting go that we become who we are meant to be."~The Single Woman

A great quote by one of my favorite women. I have to admit, without her blog and Twitter page full of fabulous quotes, I would have never gotten by this past year and counting. And, I wouldn't have become as determined as I've become if it wasn't for her woman empowerment that she makes you feel when you read anything by her.

Almost a year later, we sometimes need a reminder :) Here's a look at my blog from last year.
