A High School Memory~Day 3

4 Oct

high-school

Ahhhh high school…..the good ol’ days. I know some people wouldn’t agree with me but I absolutely loved high school. I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by great friends and people who would be part of some of my most amazing memories.

Day 3 in the October Daily Blog Challenge asks us to tell about a high school memory you will never forget. Honestly, this is very hard for me since I have so many.

Having been part of an amazing dance team that was a small part of the school’s band (yes, band was the cool thing to be part of in my school ;) )I was able to travel to places that I would never have dreamt of going to at such a young age.

One of my favorite memories is traveling to Hawaii with the band in high school when I was in tenth grade. The reason we were even allowed to travel to Hawaii was to perform in a parade in Waikiki. How many can say that they did that? Back in 1994, traveling across the country on an airplane with 100 kids was not a scary thought in most parents minds. We were still living in an innocent world and having harm being done to us while we traveled wasn’t even an option.

I remember the flight being really long to LAX and when we arrived there to catch our connecting flight, we were like that scene in Home Alone when they are running through the airport to catch their plane. This was definitely a sight to be seen. 100 kids, chaperones and my band director all trying to get to the next flight. Definitely funny now, but I’m sure back then the adults didn’t find it funny.

I remember when we landed in Oahu, the airport was absolutely beautiful. We were greeted with our very own lei and it just seemed like paradise. There were palm trees everywhere and it was sunny and warm. I can still visually see us waiting outside this beautiful airport, soaking in the sunshine, before we had to get our ride to the hotel.

It’s crazy how 19 years is such a long time ago but yet I can still feel like it was just half that amount of time. I remember in the early mornings, we would wake up and Waikiki would be so quiet, peaceful and clean. I can remember my girlfriends and I being silly and taking pictures inside (or actually outside) their Rainforest Cafe restaurant (or basically anywhere we could pose Lol). We thought it was so cool to have a ‘yard’ at a restaurant where you could hang out outside.

Being able to see Pearly Harbor was really cool, we traveled to the Dole Plantation and I remember people buying pineapples to be shipped home. As a beach lover I got see the North Shore and Waimea Bay and appreciate the ocean even more.

The last thing I’ll mention is that on the last day, a few of my friends and I decided to do a Hawaiian tradition. They say that if you throw your lei back into the water, that means you’ll be back someday (or so they told us). Well, universe, I hope that tradition is right. I would love to go back as an adult and see if it’s how I remember it (in some sense).

I could honestly go on and on. All I have to say is that this trip will forever be a memory I will never forget. I was fortunate enough to have traveled to more places in my high school career but how many can say that they traveled to Hawaii with their high school.

What’s a memory you have of your high school that you will never forget??

What I’m made of

3 Sep

With today being the first day of the new blog challenge I’m taking part in, the topic is really interesting for me and kind of appropriate since my 34th birthday just passed and I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting since then.

Today’s topic asked us to: describe where or what you come from. The people, the places, and/or the factors that make up who you are.

As I sit and think about where or what I come from, I like to think of the silly quote people from Cranston may say, “You can take the girl out of Cranston, but you can’t take Cranston out of the girl.” It honestly couldn’t be more fitting for me right now. Having grown up in a city where everyone knows everyone it can somewhat be annoying, but yet when people ask me where I’m from, I proudly smile and say Cranston. Throughout my childhood and into my adolescent years, I made the best friends a girl could ever have growing up in this city. It’s funny how at the time you know how important these friendships are but yet still take them for granted at the time and it isn’t for 22+ years later that we realize how important they really are and that we truly are a bond of sisters. It doesn’t matter the time, the distance or space that comes in between us, we will never be separated. We have been through SO many things together no one on the outside of our bond could ever understand.

This past weekend, I was blessed to have these girls around me again for my birthday. With everyone’s schedules all over the place, it’s always so hard to get us all together. I was so happy that my celebration could be the occasion that got us all together. It was as if we were 17 again and having the time of our lives dancing away like we used to.

We continued to hug each other like we didn’t want to let go, and talked as if we had just spoken to each other yesterday on the phone, even though months may have gone by. These are the friendships that will forever mean the most to me. They know me, my life, my history and yet still continue to be part of my life, and vice versa.

These girls are the angels in my life, from going through parent divorces together at the age of 12 or one of them finding your then boyfriend going behind your back and saving you from a life time of heart ache. I will forever be indebted to them and cannot truly express how much they mean to me. I look forward to the days where we are old and gray and reminisce about our crazy days and continue to laugh and cry together like we have been doing since we 9.

Day 15~ Me? Awesome? Ab-so-lutely!

17 Mar

I’m behind a few days but I am determined to get them done. Day 15 asked us to list 10 ten things that make us awesome. Ten things?! Yes, I think I’m pretty awesome, but I’ve got to admit, this list was not that easy. But I guess that’s why it’s a blog challenge! Makes us think and reflect.

10 Reasons why I’m awesome

1. I am honest. This can sometimes be to a fault, but I’m the person who is saying what everyone else is thinking. I’m the type of person who will be honest with you and I expect for people to do the same for me. But we all know that that only happens in a perfect world, and sadly my friends, we don’t live there.

2. I am loyal to you til the end. Which also can go hand in hand with number one for me. I am the most loyal person you will meet. However, if you betray me, lie to me, or lose my trust, I just cannot be loyal to you. I will not seek revenge (like some people would do), I’ll just let karma work her magic.

3. I am a great teacher. Not only am I great at my profession, teaching lovely 11-12 year old cherubs every day, but I am also good at teaching life lessons~ aka giving advice. I find that being a great communicator can help people with anything. Communication is key and I just don’t understand how some people don’t.

4. I am a really good writer. Not only just in my daily posts, but I can tell someone how I am feeling in a letter or email. I find a lot of solace in my writing and I also think you can feel someone’s true emotions in their writing. It really is a talent to be able to get your point across with words.

5. I am a fantastic aunt. I LOVE my niece and nephew with all of my heart. I would give up my life for them if I had to.

6. I am a dancer. I have a love for music. I also can pick up any choreography and execute it out. I truly love expressing myself in a piece and truly enjoy it at the same time.

7. I am funny. I know a lot of people think they are funny and I for one don’t think I’m comedian funny, but I will say that I have great quick wit, good one liners and unfortunately I am very sarcastic ( I can thank my father for that one). I have had friends say that I should have my life taped because it is that entertaining.

8. I love with all I have. This can be a fault of mine but I think it’s a pretty great trait to have. Not many do this wholeheartedly.

9. I have a big heart. I love helping people, giving to important causes and doing anything I can to support the people I love and care about and their dreams.

10. I am a strong, driven, independent woman. Yes as Destiny’s child has sung, “I’m a survivor….” that’s me. I have gone through the worst relationships possible, have had people betray and lie to me, and in the end, I have continued to come out on top. It has taken me a long time to realize I am perfect the way I am (granted there is always room for positive improvement). I am learning to truly trust in the process.

Day 13~ Regret

13 Mar

There is not a day that goes by that we all may have regretted something that we did or may have said. I know I’m guilty of this on almost a daily basis. I’m also guilty of always thinking about what I could have done differently. It has taken me almost all of my 20s and now into my 30s to realize that everything does happen for a reason. I’ve learned that regrets create worry, and worry does nothing but cause unnecessary stress and there is absolutely no need for any of it. We have to learn to just let things go and trust in the process.

There’s a reason I didn’t end up with any of ex-boyfriends. There’s a reason why I’m living where I’m living and chose to be there. There’s a reason why I continue to stay in my profession because I know deep down, I know I’m good at what I do.

To help me get through each week, or sometimes every day, I read quotes. I love them and truly live by them. Here are some quotes that I believe in and hopefully you’ll find them to be helpful to you when there are days you may feel any form of regret .

*Remember, there are no regrets in life. Just lessons.*

just lessons

regrets

forgiveness
